Ballroom Dancing, sometimes referred to as DanceSport, is a form of partner dancing or touch dancing where two people move in harmony with each other and with the music in a counter-clockwise direction around the dance floor. Ballroom Dancing is based on groups of structured figures which can be combined in an endless variety of combinations. Ballroom Dancing is an impromptu activity between a man and a women made possible through developing the skills of leading and following. This style of dancing is based on natural movement.
What
is Latin dancing?
Latin dancing is characterized by rhythmic movements danced to syncopated or
percussive Latin beats. Latin dances are generally spot dances. The movements
are compact and expressive. Latin dances are popular and fun party dances.
Examples include samba, cha- cha- cha and jive.
What is
social dancing?
Social dancing is a form of Ballroom Dancing in which the partners dance
familiar patterns in combinations indicated by the leader. Examples of social
dance events include dinner dances, fund-raisers, weddings, and holiday parties.
Dancers usually change partners during these activities. The most popular social
dances are jive, waltz, foxtrot, cha- cha-cha, tango and rumba.
What is
wedding dancing or "first dance"?
Wedding dancing refers to the first dance that couples dance together at their
wedding--usually to kick off their wedding reception. Engaged couples usually
prefer slow, romantic music and often choose a foxtrot or waltz as their first
dance.
What is
DanceSport?
DanceSport is one of the most physically demanding and mentally challenging
pursuits available to the Ballroom dancer. As in any sport, the requirements of
fitness, discipline and training are the keys to ultimate success, yet the
learning process is good fun, and the skills learned from the very beginning can
be used with confidence at any dance occasion.
What are
the benefits of dancing?
Dancing is a great way to meet new friends and maintain youthful vigour and body
awareness. In addition, weight control, improved flexibility, heart health, and
stress reduction are all benefits of Ballroom Dancing.
What
kinds of dances can I learn?
Ballroom dance can be divided into two main types : Standard dances and Latin
dances. Examples of popular standard dances include the foxtrot, waltz,
quickstep and tango. Samba, jive, rumba and cha- cha- cha are examples of latin
dances.
Do I need
a partner?
No. Classes are structured to change partners frequently, so that everyone will
have an opportunity to dance with other students and to develop general dancing
skills. Of course, couples may stay together if they choose.
What
should I wear?
Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Shoes with leather soles are preferable.
Gym shoes are not recommended shoes for Ballroom Dancing.
Is a
background in dance required?
No previous dance experience is necessary to be a successful Ballroom dancer.
Over time students develop skill and grace, improved posture and sharpened
reflexes.
Where do
people go to dance?
Weddings, parties, fund-raisers, corporate functions, night clubs, dance studio,
social parties and clubs all provide opportunities for you to practice your
footwork.
What
would be the best approach to learning?
A combination of group instruction and private lessons combined with frequent
practice sessions is the fastest route to proficiency.
How many
lessons do I need to take each week?
That is entirely up to you. Some students come in once a week while others come
in several times a week.
I don't
know how to dance at all, will I feel out of place?
No. We strive to help our students feel comfortable and confident by tailoring
our instruction to fit the student's dance level and ability.
